Authorities in Ghana
say nine people are dead after a stampede during an Eid celebration to mark the
end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Nyamekye Adane-Ameyaw, the police district
commander where the deaths occurred early Thursday, said the stampede took
place at a community center in a suburb of Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest city.
Survivors told police that the stampede happened
after the lights went out during a party at the community center and people
panicked and tried to leave.
Adane-Ameyaw said there had been an apparent
dispute between two DJs who were performing at the same time and the lights
were turned off to try to calm it.
